Sun Surfis a sub brand of Sugar Cane & Co, a Japanese brand well known for their focus onreconstructing theearly days of vintage workwear history. The brand has roots that goes back to the 1950's but it wasen't until the late 80's that Sugar Cane started building the reputation forbeingone of the best denim makers in Japan andit is a reputation they still deserve!
This is Sun Surf's version of a classic Palaka work jacket. If one thinks about the clothing history in Hawaii most people are familiar with the Hawaiian shirts, and even if Palaka garments are not as famous they are still equally associated with the history of Hawaii. Used as a workers garment, uniform or for casual use and worn by children, teenagers and seniors the Palaka fabric is referred to as the Hawaiian denim!
It isbelieved that the Palaka fabric first made it’s way to Hawaii in the late 1800’s when Americans ordered tons of checkered-patterned thick cloth from England to make uniforms for the field workers. In 1922 a localmanufacturer namedthe Hawaii Clothing Manufacturing Company was founded to meet the many needs for work garments. It was Hawaii's first clothing manufacturer. The company later changed its name to Sailor Moku Products in 1932. And this jacket ia a careful reproduction of an original made by Sailor Moku for theHilo Railroad Company. The name of the railroad company that served much of the east coast of the island Hawaii from1899 until 1946.
The fabric is a woven checked cotton in navy and white and this color combination is also the most iconic when it comes to Palaka fabric.
The jacket hasa single chest pocket and two large front pockets with flaps. The buttons are black iron donut buttons.
The jacket is pre washedsothere is no need to beworried about theshrinkage. What better way to start of this spring than wearing a jacket made ofHawaiian denim!
Dan is 186 cm tall and weighs 84 and wears a size 42.
